It is of the most beautiful examples of Baroque architecture of the Adriatic coast. It represents the unity of the sea, the island, and the town. There used to be a settlement as early as the Illirian period, which started to develop faster, not before the 15th Century. There are as many as nineteen Baroque palaces (Bujovića, Zmajević, Visković, Mazarević, Smekja,…) and they are true witnesses of the magnitude and luxury of the old times, especially during the 17th and 18th centuries. There are also many churches and artistic items of value.
